The MMVAs have already come and gone, but if you missed them you can still check out what happened @ http://mmva.muchmusic.com/, of course. Now, I admit, I have only been watching the MMVAs for the last 4 years or so but there's one thing I can't help but notice about many of the performances at it and I doubt I'm alone in it.
What I've noticed is how the performers sound 9/10s of the time, they sound like they still need vocal training, like they are having difficulty staying in their range and controlling their own voices. I find this sad because as my vocals teacher once said: Any one can learn to sing. So one has to wonder what is up at these performances to cause such talented performers to struggle? I have two theories on this.
My first theory mainly affects performers of the pop genre and usually females. I think that they struggle to do all the dance moves they need to and have enough breathe left to sing. Thus what is happening is that we are trading the artist's real talent for a performance. Personally I would rather actually listen to the performer's real voice and watch backup dancers perform than sacrifice one for the other. Music is the art of sound not the art of sight.
My second theory has to do with the slight over use of technology in music. Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against synthetic sounds and music but once again I would rather listen to the person's real voice then their animated one. Why? Because they have their own voice and should use it otherwise there is no reason for them to be seeing as the voice they are using is being produce by a computer. In other words, I believe that one of the reasons some singers struggle to control their voice is because they haven’t had enough experience with it, they haven’t had to really care what their voice sounded like because the computer could just fix it for them.
In the end these are just my theories and observations and I would be glad to discuss them with anyone who wanted to. I hope you enjoyed the MMVAs despite the few technical errors and some performers inability to sing. Please let me know what you thought of this year's MMVAs by leaving a comment.
